Choosing The Best ATV Accessories

By Kathy Kaufman

Not everyone who has a four wheeled all terrain vehicle rides it for the same reasons. Some choose this mode of transportation because the land they need to traverse is not well suited for other modes of travel, some for casual recreational use and still others for the thrill it provides. Because each person's experience is different, so are the types of ATV accessories they are likely to have installed.

The wide variety in preferred accessories is not a problem when it comes to this type of bike. There are actually so many different options available that it would take much too long to list them all individually. There are products that run the gamut from just a change in the color of the cover on the handlebars to total transformation to encased rider section.

Though there is nothing wrong with the tires the bike is born with, many find that there are others that are better designed to tackle their specific needs. They can be found in styles up to two inches larger or wider and with a variety of treads to handle different types of terrain. Adding special wheels can make mud sliding more adventurous and hauling firewood through the woods less cumbersome.

Installing lift kits is something most people will eventually decide to do whether they ride for fun or function. This is because they increase the space between the wheel axles and the under body by as much at 2". This gives the advantage of better shock absorption as well as better protection against tire damage from scraping against the metal fenders on landing impact.

Another way to customize the bike to better fit one's own personal comfort is to change out the seat. Though the one it comes with is not bad, people who enjoy seeing just how rough a trail they can handle may prefer to install one that has a thicker cushioning to better protect their bottom area. Yet another of the many options available is a model designed to more effectively accommodate two riders at the same time.

A winch is a highly recommended addition regardless of whether the vehicle is being used for utility purposes or strictly for recreation. It is an item that satisfies the requirements for concerns of both convenience and safety. The mechanism allows the bike to pull itself, or a fellow rider, out of potentially hazardous circumstances such as becoming bogged in mud or sliding down a hill, as well as providing the capability to remove fallen trees and other debris from the trail.

A hitch is another highly recommended modification among avid users. With this tool, one can hook up a wagon or trailer to move items from one location to another, or even use it to plow a plot of land. It also comes in useful should the need to tow a fellow cyclist for a bit or to haul something out of the way with more ease and convenience than doing it manually.

These items, along with others such as roll bars, storage boxes and spotting lights, are just a small sample of the many options available to those looking to add a bit of customization to their bike. It is not hard to find just the right ATV accessories to enhance the riding experience whether it be work related or just for recreation. Making the changes is half the fun.
