A Healthy Diet - What It Takes To Eat One

By James Steele

Changing your eating choices can seem daunting, but a series of small steps can go a long way. Even just making a few changes will be beneficial in the long run. It's easier to take another step once you've already taken the first, so start on the path to new you.

People still do not consume more foods that are healthy for you, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains, even though it's hardly a secret that they're good for you. The problem is, many people just don't find these foods as tempting as less healthy choices. But if you simply plan your meals around these foods that are healthy then you'll be able to include some unhealthier choices as well. In other words, think in terms of adding more healthy foods to your diet rather than depriving yourself of foods you love. If you begin to consume more vegetables, whole grains and fruits then you will have less space for the things like sweets, unhealthy snacks and carbohydrates. You begin to develop a taste for healthy foods as you eat more of them, believe it or not, so you can add more to your choices with time.

That's why it can be self-defeating to try to quit certain foods. Try keeping those special foods as a reward later in the week rather than every day. While it would be more beneficial to completely take out all junk foods from your diet, it won't hurt too much if you reserve them for a reward occasionally. Cutting back in some areas can be a good thing since you will still get to enjoy the foods you love.

Most foods we'd readily identify as junk foods contain trans fats. Fish oil and flax seed, on the other hand, contain the healthy fats we need to consume. Dairy products contain saturated fats, which can be good for our diet when taken in small amounts.

Your eating habits may not change drastically, but these new ideas will make you see some positive outcomes.

There are so many healthy foods out there for us to consume. You have become so comfortable eating unhealthy foods that it might be hard to make the switch, but healthy foods can quickly become some of your favorites. While you aren't expected to be perfect at always eating healthy, make an effort to take small treats here and there and continue to make better choices.
