There are a lot of school that are aligning their programs to the CC or the Common Core and there are many Common Core books that have been approved to use. As the people in the front line, the teachers must be armored with the necessary tools needed for teaching. The success of their students will depend a lot on their ability to effectively use the instructional materials.
It has been developed for more than a year and was built upon the foundation of the past established college and career readiness standards. Currently, there are 45 states that are implementing this program in their school.
However, they were allowed to have 15 percent of its syllabus from their own. The curriculum addresses different subjects such as math, technical subjects, social studies or history, English language arts or ELA and science. These are usually based on evidence and research and must be aligned with career and college expectations.
It is also a rigorous curriculum and benchmark internationally. If all states will adopt this, then all districts will follow the same curriculum guidelines. This is very advantageous to children who will transfer to another school since they will not lose ground or repeat much materials and will be able to transition smoothly.
Adoption of this program allows the state to have extra points on its application may compete on a grant competition. This focuses on the result of what the students should know by the time the end of the school year. For instance, in the ELA Standards, you will find an appendix with suggestions for appropriate texts for each grade level.
Yet, it is a requirement for most seniors and juniors in high school to study the Bill of Rights, the Preamble of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, a Shakespearean play and others. Other than that, it expects those grade six to be capable in contrasting and comparing various texts. Those in eleventh grade must know what are the different literary works of the American authors that became its foundations.
In writing, those in fifth grade must be capable of writing opinions that are well supported with other references. Eight graders should also be capable of writing arguments that have basis and relevant evidence. When they graduate from K12, they should know how to express complicated ideas, information and concepts in a clear manner.
Then higher years should be able to identify the aspects of a text that reveals the point of view or purpose of the author. They do this by providing an explanation, describing the procedure, discussing the experiment on the text, or defining the question the author seeks to address. In mathematics, they expect the first graders to solve word problem that calls for addition of three whole number whose sum is less than 20.
They also expect fifth graders to be able to solve fractions with different denominators and eight graders should know how to handle problems on irrational numbers.
