Texturing Drywall - Learn The Basics

By Brian Winters

If you want to improve the look of your house, consider changing the texture of your drywall. However, you may need to practice to perfect your technique for a successful drywall texturing. You can always contact your local drywall specialists to complete the task if you need professional help.

When applying mud, make sure to use the same consistency of the original texture to match your existing drywall. This can be a challenge since feathering out the edges is difficult as the mud gets trapped in between the seams and joints. Invest in good-quality taping knives if you find yourself repairing drywall from time to time.

Removing Drywall Texture

If you are carrying out large scale repairs, protect your furniture by covering them with plastic sheets or moving them to a different room to avoid damage. You can start by covering your floor with drop cloths. Using a floor scraper, apply pressure and figure out the best angle on how to remove the texture.

Apply an oil-based primer and smooth out the texture with a premixed joint compound once the wall is scraped clean. If you're going to apply a generous layer, make sure to feather it out on the edges. Let it dry overnight and repeat the process.

Knockdown Drywall Texture

Believe it or not, knockdown drywall texture is considered the most expensive when it comes to sprayer textures. The key is to knock down the bubbles or bumps of the sprayed orange peel texture with a taping knife, which creates the knockdown texture. Expect to see small and large spots once the texture is finished.

Popcorn Drywall Texture

If you want to cover the imperfections easily, consider using the popcorn texture for your drywall. Feel free to remove the popcorn texture if you want to renovate your house and look dated. Be careful in removing popcorn texture that is sprayed before 1978 since it is believed to have asbestos in it.

Orange Peel Texture

You can buy orange peel texture in spray cans if you don't like to mix your own joint compound. This is usually created with a spray nozzle with a thin mud consistency. Do not use a runny compound as this won't create an orange peel texture once it dries. Look for drywall scraps for you to practice on before going for the real thing.

If you think you need help in finishing drywall, do not hesitate to hire a specialist immediately. You may end up redoing the drywall if you don't have enough experience in texturing it.
