Pet Sitting: Caring For Pets At Home

By Johnny Chan

One of the services which is on a rise presently is Home Pet Care. In order to enhance their finances, pet care workers are often willing to provide their services in the homes of the customers. Besides being beneficial to the customer it also helps that the pet is in its comfort zone, this makes taking care of it easier rather than subject the pet to a new unknown environment.

This has double benefits as it is easy for the customer to have a pet sitter at his place and the pet sitter finds it easy to handle the pet in his house as well. The pet usually faces trouble in adjusting to the new place and is not at ease. For a better pet sitting experience, it is best to call the pet sitter home so that the pet feels comfortable and is not stubborn in his ways. Animal behavior experts usually recommend this for pet sitting.

Stress does not spare animals also. They might face a lot of stress on a daily basis. However, if the owner takes care of the pet nicely, then the pet will be stress-free. It is important that you involve your pet in games and exercises so that he stays active physically and mentally.

A pet sitter who has handled pets before will be comfortable and aware of the best way to engage, entertain and handle pets. Most importantly he should know that it is his pivotal role to ensure that the pet remains stress free. This will be possible if and only if the pet sitter has a passion for his job.

Some of the tasks that clients may expect the pet sitter to perform as a part of their services are:

1. In case it is the day for the pet's shot or vaccination, then the pet sitter should be ready to take him to the veterinary doctor. It is always good to heed to the customer's bidding.

2. Keep the pet entertained by providing the pet with chew toys. Appreciate and encourage the pet for good behavior by giving it treats at regular intervals.

3. The pet should be kept away from the areas he is not allowed to get in by the owner. Sofas, kitchen or a baby's bedroom are the common places where you would have to take special care to ensure the pet does not get in.

4. Do not be taken by a surprise if you are asked by the pet owner to water the plants indoor and outdoor. This is a common request that most of the pet owners make.

5. In case you fail to take the pet for a walk on time and the pet ends up soiling the house, you must be prepared to clear the mess created. Prior to leaving you must request the customer to provide you with a few plastic bags. Also ask the customer where the cleaning equipment is kept and take permission to use the same in case needed.

6. Keeping the area clean. The area chalked as the place for the pet, or a cage as the case may be, must be kept clean at all times. You will be expected to do it every day if the customers leave on any trip and ask you to take care of the pet.

7. It is possible that you are asked to pet more pets as the customer houses more than one pet. In this case, you should inquire beforehand about the number of pets and the number of leashes available with them before you go to their place. Most of the pet owners have sufficient number of leashes but a few of them may have less than the number of pets they rear so it is best to carry your own leash kit.

8. It is pivotal that you ensure that the pet is comfortable. Although the pet is in an environment which is familiar to it, being with a stranger that too in the absence of its owner can cause stress in the animal. A proper knowledge in dealing with the pet and knowing its moods will help you to build a rapport with the animal and ensure that you too have an enjoyable time with the new companion.
